President Donald Trump is issuing a stark warning to Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, saying the United States has removed or detonated all mines in international waters and will respond forcefully to any attempt to lay new ones.
In a post, Trump said the U.S. Navy had informed him that the mines were cleared and declared a “Zero Tolerance” policy toward future mine placement. He also said the United States is closely monitoring the strait through Space Force capabilities, emphasizing that the waterway remains under intense surveillance.
The president also referenced U.S. surveillance of nuclear-related sites, including Pickaxe Mountain and three other sites he said had already been destroyed. His remarks suggest Washington intends to maintain a close watch on both maritime activity and Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure.
I have just been informed by the United States Navy that all mines have been removed and/or detonated from within the International Waters of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has been notified that any ship or boat placing new mines will be immediately and systematically destroyed. Iran may be losing its grip over the Strait of Hormuz as commercial traffic through the strategic waterway has surged over the past two weeks.
The increase in shipping activity is raising fresh questions about Iran’s ability to control or disrupt one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
According to Kpler’s head of crude oil analysis, Homayoun Falakshahi, Iran has “at least partially lost control of the strait.”
Iran appears to be losing its grip on the Strait of Hormuz while traffic through the critical waterway has exploded by nearly 400% over the last two weeks — as ships increasingly use a US-backed corridor to cross.
Nearly 200 ships navigated the strait last week, up from 150 the previous week and just 40 two weeks earlier, according to data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center.
The surge brings total traffic along the passage route to about 20% of pre-war levels, through which roughly 20% of the world’s seaborne oil flowed in peacetime.

“It increasingly looks like Iran has at least partially lost control of the strait,” Homayoun Falakshahi, head of crude oil analysis at Kpler, told CNN this week.
“The Oman route absolutely makes the most sense,” added Dan Pickering, founder of Pickering Energy Partners, noting it’s a way for vessels to avoid the possibility of paying a toll to Tehran.
