The White House is warning that proposed immigration policies supported by Democrats could cost American taxpayers as much as $49 trillion over the next decade, citing a report from the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) that estimates the potential fiscal impact of expanded benefits and a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.
In a press release, the Trump administration argued that policies such as mass amnesty and expanded access to federal assistance programs would significantly increase government spending, while touting what it described as historic progress in border security and immigration enforcement.
The administration said the estimated $49 trillion cost would apply if a broad set of immigration policies associated with the Democratic Socialists of America were adopted.
According to the White House, the CEA estimates that the lifetime fiscal cost associated with an undocumented immigrant in the United States is $166,716 per person, placing the total estimated cost between $1.4 trillion and $1.9 trillion. The administration argues that expanding eligibility for public assistance under a broad amnesty policy would increase federal spending further.
The press release identifies three federal programs that it says would face additional costs under such a policy: the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), federal housing assistance administered by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and Medicaid.
The administration estimates that SNAP spending could rise by $3.6 billion to $4.7 billion annually, while housing assistance could increase by $2.3 billion to $3 billion per year. Medicaid costs could rise by an additional $30 billion to $40 billion annually, according to the release.
Combined, those increases would amount to an estimated $36 billion to $47 billion in additional federal spending each year, or approximately $361 billion to $475 billion over 10 years.
A new bombshell report by the Council of Economic Advisers reveals the true cost of Democrats’ extreme DSA policies – warning, if effectuated, these policies would cost American taxpayers $49 trillion over ten years.
…
Over ten years, the full suite of DSA immigration policies would cost taxpayers $49 TRILLION, over $350,000 per household – for American taxpayers over the next ten years if the Democratic Socialists of America’s top policies were adopted.
The release also highlighted the Trump administration’s success at the border.
The administration said U.S. Customs and Border Protection had recorded 16 consecutive months in which no undocumented immigrants were released into the United States at the border.
It also reported that apprehensions along the southwest border in August were 94% below the monthly average recorded under former President Joe Biden.
The release further claimed that more than 3 million illegal immigrants had left the country since Trump returned to office. Citing estimates from the Department of Homeland Security, the administration said 2.5 million had departed during an earlier reporting period and argued that sustaining that pace through 2029 could reduce the federal spending burden by between $26.7 billion and $33.7 billion annually.
