The trial date for the Department of Justice’s case against Donald Trump has been scheduled.
Judge Chutkan has scheduled the trial for March 4, 2024.
The federal judge overseeing a criminal case against former President Donald Trump for interfering with the 2020 presidential election has set a trial date of March 4, 2024, brushing aside Trump’s arguments for a two-year delay.
Judge Chutkan said she spoke “briefly” with a judge in New York who had been set to oversee a separate, hush money case against Trump later in March 2024.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg had previously said he would be flexible on that case, as long as the judges agreed.
The trial in Washington, D.C., at a courthouse only steps from the U.S. Capitol where rioters ran amok on January 6, 2021, falls deep into the 2024 election season — and just before Super Tuesday. It adds to a hectic legal schedule for Trump, who also faces charges in New York, Florida and Fulton County, Georgia.
Trump wanted the trial to take place in April of 2026.
Federal prosecutors wanted the trial in January.
But the schedule suggested by the former president for the trial to take place in April 2026, well past the next presidential election, is “far beyond what is necessary,” and risks witnesses becoming unavailable or their memories fading, Chutkan said.
…
Chutkan acknowledged at the start of the hearing that the two proposed trial dates are “far apart,” and said “neither of them are acceptable.” She poured cold water on Trump’s proposed April 2026 trial date, telling his lead attorney, John Lauro, that “this case is not going to trial in 2026.”
The former president’s other obligations should not impact the timing of his trial in Washington, the judge said.
“Mr. Trump will have to make this trial date work … regardless of his schedule,” Chutkan said.
Election interference.
