Trump Effect: DHS Says Border Patrol Recorded Zero Releases for 16th Straight Month

The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Thursday that Border Patrol recorded zero releases at the border for the 16th consecutive month.
DHS said Border Patrol apprehended 8,870 people along the southwest border in August, a 5% decrease from July.
The department said the August southwest border apprehension figure was 94% lower than the monthly average during the Biden administration and 97% below the administration’s peak in December 2023. DHS also said the August total was lower than the number of people apprehended during five days in August 2024.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said, “Sixteen straight months of zero releases at the border proves that President Trump’s policies are working…Catch and release is over, consequences are back, and illegal crossings have fallen to historic lows.”
DHS attributed the decline in apprehensions and releases to the Trump administration’s border enforcement policies.
The department said Border Patrol released no people in August, compared with 10,186 releases along the southwest border in August 2024.

- The U.S. Border Patrol released zero illegal aliens in August, compared with 10,186 released by the Border Patrol under the Biden administration along the southwest border in August 2024.
DHS also revealed that they are taking drugs off the streets and not letting them enter the United States.
They seized more than under the Biden administration.
They reported increased drug seizures during the fiscal year. DHS said CBP had seized 73% more drugs through August than during the same period of fiscal year 2024 and 61% more than the average amount seized during the same period over the previous four years.
Cocaine seizures totaled 6,724 pounds in August, a 28% increase, while CBP reported seizing 773 pounds of fentanyl. CBP, working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also seized more than 120,000 pounds of precursor chemicals used to make illicit drugs, according to DHS.
