Report: GOP Megadonor Pulls Cash Over Senate Failure To Pass SAVE Act

GOP megadonor and billionaire Timothy Mellon reportedly told Senate Republicans that he would not donate to them over their failure to pass the SAVE Act.
Mellon did, however, donate $20 million last month to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports the election of House Republicans.
One of the Republican Party’s top donors dramatically scaled back his political giving before November’s midterm elections, adding to the pressures facing GOP candidates already confronting voter frustration over the Iran war and the cost of living.
Billionaire Timothy Mellon, who poured nearly $200 million into supporting President Donald Trump and other Republicans in 2024, has made only about $3 million in publicly disclosed contributions this cycle, The New York Times reported Thursday.
Mellon also gave $20 million last month to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports House Republicans, according to the Times.

According to the Times, Mellon’s dissatisfaction centers on Senate Republicans’ failure to pass the SAVE America Act, a Trump-backed election bill that would have imposed a nationwide voter ID requirement, required proof of citizenship to register and sharply restricted voting by mail.

The Times reported that Mellon, after receiving a fundraising solicitation from Senate Republicans, personally responded that he would not contribute because the chamber had failed to pass the legislation.
Republicans are not struggling for money.
Both Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Super PACs dumped millions into races earlier this month.
Earlier this month the PAC, No Going Back, dumped over $74 million in ad time into various races.

The Trump-affiliated Republican political action committee No Going Back reserved more than $74 million in ad time this week across 15 different House races as well as Senate races in six battleground states: Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Ohio, according to political ad research firm AdImpact. More reservations were coming in Friday afternoon, it added.
The PAC has spent the most money, $15.7 million, locking in air time in Michigan where Abdul El-Sayed, who is backed by several prominent democratic socialists, pulled ahead of Republican Mike Rogers in the polls last month, AdImpact said. One of the ads it’s airing in that market replays excerpts of interviews with El-Sayed in which he questioned whether police needed to carry guns and called for defunding the police. A spokesperson for El-Sayed didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Additionally, Musk’s America PAC and Trump’s main fundraising arm MAGA Inc. have in recent days poured $2.6 million and $10 million respectively into the race for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas where state Attorney General Ken Paxton risks becoming the first Republican to lose to a Democrat in a statewide election there in decades.
About $7.1 million of that money is being spent on attack ads against Democratic state lawmaker James Talarico who leads Paxton by 2.1 percentage points in an average of polls compiled by Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin.
