The National Republican Senatorial Committee is now backing Trump-endorsed Ken Paxton.
Paxton filed paperwork on Monday to make a joint fundraising committee with the NRSC.
The NRSC previously backed John Cornyn.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee will fundraise for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, according to campaign finance paperwork filed Monday, the clearest indication yet that national Republicans are rallying behind their controversial GOP nominee.
Paxton filed paperwork on Monday for a joint fundraising committee with the NRSC. A person familiar with the committee’s thinking who was granted anonymity to describe internal decisionmaking told POLITICO the GOP’s Senate campaign arm will also work with Paxton on digital fundraising and direct mail.
The committee is giving Paxton “the same treatment we give all of our candidates and incumbents,” the person said.
The moves come after the NRSC and its staff — which supported incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the primary — wiped its social media of anti-Paxton material after last week’s runoff.
Paxton beat Cornyn in a runoff election.
He will now face James Talarico in November.
Paxton has long been an outsider and maverick candidate within Republican politics. He managed to survive an impeachment effort led by legacy Republicans in the state legislature and has fended off several scandals involving alleged personal misconduct.
He ultimately defeated Cornyn by nearly two to one and will face Democratic candidate James Talarico in the November general election. The contest is expected to favor the Republican, as the state broke for President Donald Trump by double digits in 2024, though it will likely be closer.
Trump endorsed Paxton before the run off election.
President Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Texas Republican Senate primary runoff on Tuesday, a day after the start of early voting.
Why it matters: Senate Republicans spent months pleading with Trump to endorse incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn over Paxton.
Catch up quick: Trump had posted that an endorsement was coming after the March 3 primary and said whoever didn’t get his endorsement should drop out. That endorsement didn’t materialize at the time.
