Layoffs are coming to CBS.
In January, CBS News chief Bari Weiss told employees that changes could be coming amid a “tsunami of technological change.”
Weiss wants CBS to focus more on exclusive reports.
CBS News chief Bari Weiss is reportedly planning the “imminent” layoff of dozens of staffers as she looks to remake the network for the digital age.
Weiss first made mention of the cuts several weeks, according to Business Insider — as she told CBS News employees that a “tsunami of technological change” could lead to changes at the network.
“I can’t stand up here and tell you that in a moment of incredible transformation that that’s not going to mean transformation of our workforce,” Weiss told staffers at a late-January town hall meeting.
During the meeting, Weiss said CBS was shifting away from “commodity news” in favor of exclusive reports that can’t be found “anywhere else.”
“If you can get what we’re selling in five other places, in 10 other places, in 100 other places — that’s probably not a thing we need to double down on,” Weiss said.
Some of those layoffs are now here.
The news division could be cut by as much as 6%.
The layoffs could impact close to 60 people.
A memo to staffers stated that all employees who will be affected by the layoffs “will be notified by the end of the day.”
The Tiffany Network’s news division could cut as much as 6% of its workforce, according to people familiar with the matter.
A CBS source told The Post that the layoffs are likely to impact close to 60 people.
Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski told staffers that layoffs were underway, writing in a memo on Friday: “Today we are reducing the size of our workforce, and employees who are affected will be notified by the end of the day.”
They acknowledged the toll of the cuts, telling employees: “Because these aren’t just names on a list. They are talented, committed colleagues who have been critical to our success.”
CBS News Radio is also ending.
CBS News Radio, which provides material for around 700 stations across the country, will end its service on May 22. Weiss and Cibrowski said the decision to end the radio division “was a necessary decision, [but] it was not an easy one,” according to a second memo obtained by CNN.
“The coming weeks will be difficult for the team members who have worked tirelessly at CBS News Radio,” they said. “We are committed to supporting these valued colleagues with care and respect as we wind down operations. They have been critical to our success and remain treasured friends and professionals. We thank them deeply for their contributions.”
