Reporter: “What should Chinese President Xi know about your commitment to Taiwan?”
Biden: “We agree with what we signed onto a long time ago. And that there’s one China policy, and Taiwan makes their own judgments about their independence…We are not moving — we’re not encouraging their being independent. We’re not — that — that’s their decision.”
Reporter: “But would U.S. Forces defend the island?”
Biden: “Yes, if in fact there was an unprecedented attack”
The White House had to clean up for Biden saying US policy towards Taiwan has not changed despite Biden’s words.
Asked to comment, a White House spokesperson said U.S. policy towards Taiwan had not changed.
“The president has said this before, including in Tokyo earlier this year. He also made clear then that our Taiwan policy hasn’t changed. That remains true,” the spokesperson said.
Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular briefing in Beijing that Biden’s comments sent a “seriously wrong signal” to separatists forces for Taiwan independence.
Another Biden blunder.
