Arizona’s Republican party has asked the state’s Supreme Court to strike down the vote-by-mail system used by 90 percent of registered voters, The Associated Press reported.

In a lawsuit filed on Friday, the state party argues that absentee voting is unconstitutional, asking the justices to get rid of the “no-excuse” absentee balloting system created in 1991.

“In-person voting at the polls on a fixed date (election day) is the only constitutional manner of voting in Arizona,” attorneys for the state’s GOP wrote in a petition to the Supreme Court.

The GOP’s lawsuit also cites a provision in the state’s constitution that says “electors may express at the polls their approval or disapproval of (a) measure,” arguing that “at the polls” means votes much be cast in person.
